Discover the Life Saving Work of the North West Air Ambulance Charity

Living North's chosen charity for our very first North West Christmas Fair is the North West Air Ambulance Charity (NWAA)
The North West Air Ambulance Charity was established in 1999 and essentially brings the hospital to the patient – delivering advanced medical care at the scene of incidents across the North West. More than just a local charity, it’s a vital service regionwide. ‘We serve over eight million people across 5,500 square miles, from Carlisle to Crewe, and we receive no government or NHS funding,’ says Rhianna McDermott, regional fundraiser for NWAA. ‘Every mission we go to is funded entirely by public donations and fundraising efforts.’
The crew (made up of critical care paramedics and consultant-level doctors) respond to emergencies by helicopter and critical care car, delivering lifesaving interventions at the scene. ‘Since our launch, we’ve flown over 48,000 missions, making a profound difference to countless lives,’ says Rhianna. ‘In 2024, we became the first UK air ambulance charity whose critical care paramedics are able to perform blood transfusions without a doctor present, meaning we now carry blood on board our entire fleet – a groundbreaking step in pre-hospital care.
‘When every second counts, our service ensures patients receive hospital-level care wherever they are – whether that’s a remote hiking trail, a motorway, or a city centre. We work closely with all six major trauma hospitals in the region, and strategic partners like North West Ambulance Service, Greater Manchester Blood Bikes and North West Blood Bikes Lakes and Lancs to deliver the best outcomes for our patients. Our patients are at the heart of everything we do, and we aim to give them the best possible chance of survival. Many people in our region are alive today thanks to the skill, compassion, and dedication of our crew.’

Rhianna works closely with supporters and communities to raise vital funds that keep this lifesaving service running. ‘We need to raise over £18 million every year to keep saving lives,’ says Rhianna. There are a variety of ways in which people can help, including by donating online or at events, fundraising in their community or workplace, volunteering time and skills, shopping at the charity stores, and spreading the word about the charity’s vital work. ‘Every pound makes a difference and helps us continue saving lives across the North West,’ Rhianna adds.
You can meet some of the NWAA team at our very first North West Christmas Fair at Haydock Park Racecourse from 6th to 9th November, where we’ll also be helping to raise money for the charity. ‘We’ll be at the Fair to share more about our mission and how you can get involved,’ says Rhianna. ‘Expect friendly faces, inspiring stories, and the chance to learn how your support helps bring hospital-level care to those who need it most. We’ll also be selling our charity Christmas cards, which are a great opportunity to support our cause while getting ahead on your festive shopping. Whether you want to donate, volunteer, or just find out more – we’d love to meet you!’
